In the bustling world of high-pressure jobs, finding a serene and relaxing space to unwind is essential. For this young couple, the female client, who works in a high-pressure operating room, and the male client, who owns a trendy restaurant, a warm and stylish home was a necessity. Designer Chun Hung Chen took on the challenge of creating a residence that would provide a sense of calm and relaxation.
The foyer of Serenity sets the tone for the entire home. Designed as a showcase of fine goods, it serves as a display area for the man's favorite shoes and a gallery of silk scarves, creating a sense of ceremony for the woman. The use of low saturation colors throughout the space further enhances the relaxed and serene feeling.
One of the unique features of Serenity is the renovation of the 2.3-meter beam with a gray mirror design. This modification magnifies the visual sense of space, creating a bright and airy atmosphere. The intention behind this design choice is to help the family break away from the tight and tired work, allowing them to truly relax.
To add texture and depth to the space without overwhelming it with color, the designer incorporated technological wood grain panels on the walls. This subtle wood grain embellishment adds a touch of warmth and natural beauty to the simple and plain space. By reducing the use of paint, the designer allows the natural atmosphere of the materials to shine through, creating a gentle and pleasant home.
Serenity boasts a spacious layout of 105 square meters, featuring three rooms, a dining room, and a living room. The designer's creativity is evident in the clear delineation of public and private areas, as well as the seamless integration of the space horizontally and vertically. Good lighting design ensures that natural light floods into the house, further enhancing the quiet and relaxing atmosphere.
As a couple who loves to collect various items, the clients were delighted with the deliberate planning of showcases in the space. These showcases not only enhance the texture of the space and create a personal style but also offer a visual feast of multiple elements.
The Serenity project was completed in November 2021 in Taiwan. The designer's research focused on creating a house full of calmness and relaxation, using black, white, and gray color palettes. Attention to detail was key in achieving a unique and tranquil feeling, allowing the clients to escape from their tired and nervous moods.
Overcoming challenges, such as the removal of one room to create a custom-made dressing room and the use of hidden designs to maintain visual consistency, the designer successfully transformed Serenity into a space that breaks away from visual frameworks. Leather panels, gray mirrors, and stainless-steel strips add depth and character to the living room and master bedroom, creating a tranquil environment that goes beyond the ordinary.
Serenity was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022. This prestigious award recognizes designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
